Field Visit The Center for Biotechnology Research hosted fourth-year students from the Department of Life Sciences, College of Science, University of Baghdad. The visit aimed to provide brief lectures on laboratory operations, delivered by laboratory supervisors, focusing on key laboratory techniques and methods. These included a simplified explanation of DNA extraction methods, gel electrophoresis, animal cell culture techniques, the use of ELISA equipment, and various other laboratory devices. Additionally, the students were introduced to the incubator environment, plant handling procedures, and methods of storage and preservation to prevent damage
Scientific Discussion Assistant Professor Dr. Suad Ghazi Jaafar, from the Department of Medical and Molecular Techniques at the Biotechnology Research Center, Al-Nahrain University, participated in the discussion of a master’s thesis at the College of Science, University of Kirkuk. The thesis, titled “Evaluation of the Gene Expression of CD47 and SIRP-α in Diabetic Patients in Kirkuk City,” was presented by the student Thabit Ibrahim Ahmed Al-Dulaimi under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Shelan Khairallah Jabbar. The study aimed to evaluate the role of gene expression of CD47 and SIRP-α in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their impact on disease progression. The objectives included estimating the levels of CD47 and SIRP-α in patients and comparing them with healthy individuals, analyzing their gene expression using the qRT-PCR technique, measuring lipid profile levels, blood sugar, and HbA1c, and analyzing changes in protein levels for both genes. The results revealed a positive correlation between the diabetic group and the SIRP-α protein level, with a higher rate of SIRP-α observed in type 1 diabetes patients compared to type 2 and the control group. The study also demonstrated that the gene expression levels of CD47 have a significant relationship with the progression of diabetes. Additionally, it showed that the gene expression of SIRP-α was higher in healthy individuals compared to diabetic patients. These findings indicate changes in gene and protein expression associated with disease mechanisms and highlight the importance of these genes in diabetes. This provides a basis for improving diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in the future
A Scientific Course The Center for Biotechnology Research at Al-Nahrain University has initiated a scientific course on pathological analyses, presented by a group of faculty members from the Department of Environmental Biotechnology. The course aims to provide a detailed explanation of various blood analyses, blood components, and the types of results associated with blood diseases. It includes both theoretical and practical aspects, where participants will be trained on blood drawing, separation, and analysis methods to reach final results
Scientific Discussion Assistant Professor Dr. Ghaidaa Hussein Abdul Rahim, a faculty member in the Department of Environment at the Biotechnology Research Center, Al-Nahrain University, participated as a committee member in the defense of the master’s thesis of researcher Mohammed Nouri Duhaie from the College of Biotechnology at the same university. The thesis was titled: “Molecular Detection and Sequencing of Fluoroquinolones Resistance Gene and Antibiotic Resistance Profile of Enterococcus spp. Isolated from Clinical Samples in Babel/Iraq.” The thesis aimed to study the resistance genes of Enterococcus spp. against antibiotics, focusing on bacteria isolated clinically from patients in hospitals in Babel Governorate, Iraq. The defense took place at the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies, University of Baghdad. This collaboration is part of joint scientific efforts to promote research and exchange expertise between the universities of Baghdad and Al-Nahrain
Certificate of Evaluation from an International Journal Dr. Ahmed Flaih Hassan, a faculty member from the Department of Plant Biotechnology, has received an international evaluation certificate from Elsevier Publishing House. The purpose of this certificate is to evaluate his scientific research for the journal International Immunopharmacology, which is ranked in the first quartile (Q1) in the Scopus database. This recognition was granted following the evaluation of a rigorous scientific research paper and providing an opinion on its suitability with the scope of the journal
